Overview
This position is located in the Acquisition and Processing Section, Music Division, Special Collections Directorate, Researcher and Collections Services. The Performing Arts Specialist has primary curatorial and acquisition responsibilities for antiquarian items and the special collections of the Music Division, one of the foremost special collections repositories of the world. Numbering over 30 million items and spanning more than 1,000 years of Western performing arts history and practice, the Music Division’s archival holdings include performing arts and literary manuscripts, iconography, musical instruments, published and unpublished copyright deposits, and over 800 special collections in the performing arts. For the purposes of this position description, “performing arts” shall encompass music, theater, and/or dance. The Specialist combines the skill sets of musicologists or historians in dance or theater, curators, librarians, archivists, and acquisitions officers. The Specialist works under the general supervision of the Head of the Acquisitions & Processing Section, who provides guidance concerning the general scope, direction, and objective of assignments. The Specialist participates with section leadership in the making of policy decisions, especially, but not exclusively, those related to collection development. The Specialist performs at a high degree of responsibility in interpretation of collections, outreach, and advanced reference capacities.
Duties
As the Performing Arts Specialist, you will:
- Survey and evaluate the Library’s collections relating to performing arts.
- Maintain professional contacts, for instance with performing artists and/or their representatives, performing arts and antiquarian dealers, auction houses, publishers, individuals, and other sources in the context of acquisitions work.
- Travel outside the Library to inspect collections and consults with prospective donors or other sources, both private and institutional, concerning possible Library acquisitions. Write reports on Library acquisitions.
- Curate scholarly exhibits of Music Division materials, including selecting items and preparing text for captions and publications. Prepare special lectures and tours for classes, groups, concert audiences, and distinguished guests.
- Serve as liaison between the Library and various external organizations and institutions, as well as the public, regarding Music Division projects and activities.
- Conduct in-depth research using resources inside and outside the Music Division, including electronic resources.
- Advise on the processing of complex bodies of performing arts and materials of related fields.
- Develop original methods of solving organizational problems posed by special collections, antiquarian items, and other collection materials.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.
- Knowledge of music and related subject areas in the performing arts.
- Ability to provide acquisition and collection development activities in the field of performing arts.
- Ability to provide outreach, consultation and liaison services.
- Knowledge of the principles, concepts, and techniques of library science.
- Ability to provide reference and research services.
- Ability to effectively communicate in writing.
- Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.
Education
All librarians must meet the requirements for professional education in library science or possess equivalent experience and education.
A. Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor’s degree;
or
B. A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.

About This Role
This is a hybrid position (2 to 3 days per week in the office) for a professional with documented secondary research experience in a market intelligence, business intelligence, or competitive intelligence role; in a law firm, in a professional services or investment firm, in government, or as a talent sourcing professional with a focus on secondary research. This position is ideally located in DC or NY.
Strategic researchers gather data from secondary sources and distill their findings into actionable insights to meet our recruiters’ needs. Our researchers have deep experience in retrieving data from commercial sources and the ability to transform findings into tables, charts, action items, and longer reports. AI in particular is becoming a standard part of our secondary research and analysis toolkit, and our team utilizes AI to support their research. Our staff run multiple database searchers, summarize their results, and then discuss them with the recruiters they support.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research using information sources that target the legal and recruiting industries in the US and UK, and supplement with research from other business sources.
- Deliver written research on ad hoc topics with reference to legal markets, specific law firms, and their clients and clients’ industries.
- Help develop and populate internal databases used in our search process including coding specific law firm practice areas and market specializations.
- Complete targeted candidate searches and business development intelligence as requested from recruiters and staff.
- Maintain and update shared internal information sources in Power BI and SharePoint.
Requirements and Qualifications
Experience: 3–5+ years in an intelligence/information/library function supporting a business in an information-intensive field is preferred. Experience in government or general legal practice is highly desirable.
Domain Knowledge: Strong knowledge of secondary sources used by researchers in legal or professional services or in government (transactions, finance, dockets, industry rankings, legislation/regulation, legal industry news, government news sources, general business research).
Critical Thinking: A strong continuous-improvement mindset regarding what makes research quality excellent, and how to make it better.
Technical Skills: Demonstrated experience with Word templates and Excel features like formulas, pivot tables, and conditional formatting. Skills with PowerPoint and SharePoint are highly desirable.
AI Fluency: Professional-level AI expertise (CoPilot, Gemini, ChatGPT, or Claude). Applicants should be prepared to discuss this experience during the interview process.
