Overview:
The Judge Kathryn J. DuFour Law Library at The Catholic University of America School of Law is seeking applicants for the position of Senior Access Services Librarian. This position is ideal for an access services librarian who is ready to join an experienced, collegial team that is committed to reimagining library services for our patrons. The successful candidate will manage the department’s core functions, including circulation, course reserves, and the interlibrary loan and resource sharing operations. The successful candidate will have direct supervision of one paraprofessional and one professional librarian, with indirect supervision of 20-25 part-time student employees. The Senior Access Services Librarian provides coordination of the Access Services Department and continually monitors and reports departmental needs to the Director. This position oversees rollout of effective policies and workflows for all aspects of access services, including maintenance of user accounts, loan rules and borrowing policies for the library’s physical collection, interlibrary loan and resource sharing operations, library signage, and part-time student employee procedures. The Senior Access Services Librarian hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates professional librarians, and paraprofessionals within the Access Services Department, as well as sets goals, priorities, and performance measures. These management responsibilities also include overseeing and mentoring full-time Access Services staff through the hiring, training, and day-to-day management of the department’s part-time student employees.
This role works with the Director and Assistant Directors to maintain the library’s access policy, operating hours, emergency procedures, and overall use of the library’s public spaces and collection. This includes: working with various departments within the Law School and University campus to ensure access to the library; advising on WRLC policies and initiatives related to resource sharing, including Shared Collections Facility (SCF), Consortium Loan Service (CLS) and WRLC delivery service. In collaboration with the Systems & Electronic Resources Librarian, oversees operations of all areas of the Library’s integrated library system related to circulation, course reserves, interlibrary loan and resource sharing, and user records.
The Senior Access Services Librarian serves as the Depository Library Coordinator for the Federal Depository Library Program and assists the Director with mandatory reporting requirements, such as the biennial survey.

The CAVC librarian/JRO reports directly to the Deputy Executive Officer and serves all Judges, the Clerk of the Court, and all Court staff. The tasks performed vary daily and cover a broad range of library functions including technical and research services for the Court, overseeing all library operations, as well as managing the chambers’ collections and subscriptions. The librarian/JRO independently makes decisions based on thorough knowledge of the profession and the library’s policies, practices, and judicial needs. The Librarian/JRO plans and manages the CAVC Records Management Program (CAVC RMP) in accordance with the Federal Records Act, as implemented by federal courts and overseen by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).
Major Duties:
The Librarian/JRO performs duties and has responsibilities such as the following:
- Oversees technical services: acquisitions, cataloging, classification, and materials processing.
- Maintains Court inventory of law books, subscriptions, and chambers book collections.
- Purges obsolete and/or unwanted resources, while complying with federal and local regulations and policies.

- Manually uploads Court decisions/opinions for inclusion on the Court’s website.
- Serves as the liaison with Westlaw and Lexis, troubleshooting any problems with the publication of the Court’s documents.
- Participates in library networks and initiates and maintains professional contacts with other librarians to provide the fullest possible range of research materials to Judges and other Court staff.
- Develops and justifies the library’s annual budget.
- Manages and maintains the content of the CAVC internet and intranet websites. Develops, formats, writes and/or edits new and existing webpage content.

- Drafts, coordinates, maintains, and tracks CAVC-specific policies, directives, procedures, and guidance that address records (especially electronic and email records), regulatory requirements, and CAVC needs. Qualifications:
- Knowledge in the basic concepts, principles, policies, and theories of library administration and management, and records management, and the Library of Congress classification system and cataloging procedures and practices.
- Knowledge of legal resources (e.g., Bloomberg Law, Lexis+, and Westlaw) available for research and skill in conducting legal research including legislative history searches using various research platforms.
- Ability to instruct Court staff in various legal research techniques using electronic and conventional media, with experience training patrons in one-on-one or group settings.
- Knowledge of the principles, responsibilities, and requirements for managing records in accordance with the Federal Records Act, as implemented by federal courts and overseen by NARA. This should include knowledge of records inventories, file plans, policy creation, answering and creating surveys, and records schedules.
