Job Summary: Manages the daily operation of the library; provides customer service and assistance to patrons; oversees maintenance, staff and volunteer supervision, program and outreach coordination, and the development of the library collection; records library statistics and prepares budget requests; generates monthly, quarterly, and annual reports; handles incident reporting; performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for the coordination of all library services and programs in the assigned branch.
  • Oversee maintenance activities, including facility upkeep and security.
  • Directly or indirectly manages all staff, including hiring, training, evaluating, and disciplinary actions.
  • Schedules staff to ensure adequate coverage for the branch during all open hours;
  • Coordinates and may present library programs
  • Oversee the development of the branches’ library collection, including ordering materials;
  • Assists at the circulation and information desk and answers reference and information questions in person, by phone, and by email.
  • Evaluates and refines library resources.
  • Creates and distributes informational materials to promote the use of library services.
  • Provides formal and informal instruction regarding the use of the library systems for patrons and staff.
  • Provides staff and volunteer-oriented development, training, and coaching opportunities.
  • Establishes and oversees assignments and the division of work among library staff
  • Coordinates internal and contract event planning.
  • Manages the Branch budget and records statistical information.
  • Records and generates monthly, quarterly, and annual reports. 
  • Fills in for all branch tasks as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required for Mobile Library and Outreach Manager: Coordinates programming, outreach, and information between the library and local community organizations and educational institutions.

  • Thorough knowledge of established library practices and procedures, including collection development, outreach coordination, program development, and presentation.

BA/BS degree.

LATI Certification.

MLS preferred.

One to three years of experience.

Specialized Licenses: Required for Mobile Library and Outreach Manager: Must possess a valid CDL Class B, Maryland Driver’s License and a submit a copy of DMV driving record.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Work is conducted in a normal office environment with comfortable lighting, temperature, and air conditioning The position may require walking and standing for extended periods, as well as moderate lifting, such as three to four reams of paper, four to five books, or other materials weighing approximately 20–40 pounds.

Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting rooms, e.g. use of safe work place practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals.

Position: Open Science/STEM Librarian

Description

The STEM Library serves several colleges and schools, including the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the A. James Clark School of Engineering, School of Public Health, and the College of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences. Along with other STEM and other subject librarians, the incumbent is in a key position to help the University of Maryland Libraries define a role for subject librarians that will allow the Libraries to be more closely integrated into the entire educational and research process at the University of Maryland.

The Open Science/STEM Librarian reports to the Head of the STEM Library and is a valued member of the STEM Library and Research and Academic Services Division. The Open Science/STEM librarian manages a combination of duties and expectations, with responsibilities in: Collections and Content, Reference and Research Consulting, Teaching, Learning and Literacies, Outreach and Engagement, and Scholarly Communications and Research Data Services. The incumbent’s subject assignment will be in Engineering and Physical Sciences departments. Additionally, the STEM & Open Science Librarian will develop programs benefiting their communities to expand the Libraries’ research-related programs and services. Programming may focus on issues relevant to the STEM community in the following categories: information literacy, scholarly communication, GIS, Maker lab, etc. 


The STEM & Open Science Librarian will help envision and shape new approaches to faculty/library relationships. Early career librarians, experienced librarians as well as those with significant coursework, bachelor’s degree or second advanced degree in related fields are encouraged to apply.

Education – Required Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution of higher education or a non-US equivalent by the start of employment, or an advanced degree with two years relevant experience. Degree must be conferred by 7/1/2026.
