LLAM LRI: Cybersecurity and You

Cybersecurity is an ongoing and complex issue affecting institutions at the local, state and national level.

Millions of attempts to breach security occur daily to gain access to clinical, legal, financial and other systems. However, where are the fine lines being drawn between insuring data security and enabling access? And what about individual rights?  This conference will bring together public and private sector organizations working to prevent or stop cybersecurity threats to discuss the legal, regulatory, and policy framework of cybersecurity.  The conversation will cover academic, government and private entities, as well as the preventative measures that individuals should take to guard their own online presence. PROGRAM

9 AM – 10 AM : Registration

10 AM – 10:05 AM : Opening Remarks
Peter Murray, Chief Information Officer and Vice President for Information Technology, University of Maryland Baltimore.

10:05 AM – 11:15 AM : Opening Keynote
[Successfully] Operating in Denied Areas Online
The United States Department of Defense defines a denied area as “an area under enemy or unfriendly control in which friendly forces cannot expect to operate successfully within existing operational constraints and force capabilities.”  This definition — while customarily applicable to intelligence agents and soldiers/sailors/airmen working in enemy locations — perfectly embodies the experience of today’s regular Internet user as well.  Surveillance is heavy. Unfriendly forces control key aspects of the Internet. Operational constraints are severe, and the user’s capabilities are limited. How can average Internet users successfully work online, securely and with reasonable online privacy, nothwithstanding all these challenges?

Keynote Speaker: Joe St Sauver, Ph.D., a scientist at a data driven security company, with previous work experience in higher education, and Interent2/InCommon.

11:15 AM – 12:15 PM : Morning Program A
Panel Discussion – Research Data Sharing and Security
How UMB meets challenges in sharing and securing research data.
Moderator: M.J. Tooey, Executive Director of Health Sciences and Human Services Library / Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, UMB

11:15 AM – 12:15 PM : Morning Program B (Rm. 349)
Securing Legal Information: Threat, Impact, and Awareness
Cybersecurity trends and their impacts on the legal industry.

12:15 AM – 12:30 PM : Pick Up the Lunch Box  & Join the Lunch Program!

12:30 PM – 1:30 PM : Lunch Program

Massive data collection practices by the government under the Fourth Amendment and their implications for libraries; Current legislative efforts potentially detrimental to library users’ privacy.

AALL Scholarship Applications Due April 1, 2016

On behalf of the American Association of Law Libraries and its Scholarships Jury, we would like to inform you of the available scholarships.

AALL offers the Marcia J. Koslov Scholarship, which provides funding for state, court, and county law librarians to attend conferences, seminars, and other live continuing education opportunities, for professional development, networking, and increased leadership roles beyond the usual law library-related conferences.

AALL also offers a Scholarship for Continuing Education Classes, available for all law librarians (not limited to state, court, and county law librarians) who wish to register for continuing education courses related to their fields.

Additionally, the George A. Strait Minority Scholarship is for degree candidates in law school or library school who belong to minority groups and who intend to have a career in law librarianship. If any of you know any students who would qualify for those scholarship opportunities, please feel free to let them know how and where to apply.

In the past, not many librarians have applied for these scholarships. AALL hopes that through publicizing them more, we will encourage more applicants.

As with all AALL scholarships, the Koslov, Strait, and Continuing Education Scholarship applications are due on April 1st. If you know colleagues who should apply, please help us spread the word. Thank you, and good luck!

Please go to http://www.aallnet.org/main-menu/Member-Resources/scholarships/Marcia-J-Koslov-Scholarship for additional information on the Koslov scholarship, as well as the application.

Please go to http://www.aallnet.org/main-menu/Member-Resources/scholarships/Scholarship-Applications for the applications for the AALL Educational Scholarships, the George A. Strait Scholarship, and the Continuing Professional Education Classes Scholarship.

Maryland Partners for Justice – May 14 in Baltimore

The work of law librarians will be a topic at the conference this year: “Access to Justice through Access to Legal Information” with Catherine McGuire, Dave Pantzer, Mary Jo Lazun and Sara Witman on the panel.  Here is the program description: Knowledge of the law and the legal system is an important component in providing Access to Justice. Everyone says “it’s all online” – but where?  Law librarians will showcase free resources that can be used by legal services providers for their own research or as referrals to clients or anyone interested in accessing legal information. The Maryland State Law Library website contains a wealth of information on legal resources and legal research including links to free online legal resources.  The Maryland People’s Law Library is “a legal information and self-help website maintained by the Maryland State Law Library.”  Everyone knows how to use Google but may not be familiar with the Google tools for accessing legal resources.  Learn the many ways that Google can enhance legal research for attorneys and non-attorneys alike.

The early bird rate – until April 24 – is only $95 ($105 after).  Considering this includes breakfast and lunch in addition to the great programming there is no good reason to miss this conference. In addition to the law library program another interesting program will be “Serial” – How the Popular Podcast Impacts the Court System.   It is great opportunity for law librarians to let the legal community know the role we play in access to justice.

It would be great to see more of the law library community this year!

National Plan for Access to US Government Information

Earlier this week at the Maryland State Archives, Mary Alice Baish the U.S. Superintendent of Documents, presented the National Plant for Access to US Government Information to a group of LLAM members for our February Program. The attached PDF is a copy of her Powerpoint presentation.  Check it out for some really helpful nuggets of information!
