Please note: The salary range above represents this position’s earning potential. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be $70,556 to $98,587 based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

What You’ll Be Doing

Essential Duties/Major Responsibilities:

The Librarian I (Download PDF reader) at MCPL provides reference, readers advisory, programming, and general assistance in support of the mission, vision, and values of Montgomery County Public Libraries. 

Under supervision, the Librarian I will…

  • Promote and support MCPL’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion values with staff and customers. Center the experiences of people and communities who are most affected by structural inequities when engaging in programming, partnerships, and information services work.
  • Provide professional librarian assistance in person and by telephone or email to Adults and Teens for locating print and electronic information resources, books, audiobooks, videos, and other resources.
  • Plan and present programs for specific ages.
  • Assist in weeding and merchandising materials in the branch collection.
  • Perform outreach to the community and outside agencies.
  • Provide one-on-one computer instruction and assistance as needed.
  • Participate in committees, workgroups for projects, and initiatives for the library system.

THIS RECRUITMENT WILL GENERATE A 6-MONTH ELIGIBLE LIST TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANCIES FOR THE LIBRARIAN I POSITIONS AT ALL BRANCH LOCATIONS WITHIN MCPL.

Hours for this position:

  • Library hours of operation are 7 days a week including evenings, days, and weekends. Employees are expected to be available for work during these times. Individual schedules, including evenings and weekends, will vary based on branch operational needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Master’s degree in library science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association.

Experience: None

Licensure: Employees will be responsible for maintaining appropriate level of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to sustain licensing. Note: There will be no substitutions for this section. 

Equivalency: None

Medical exam protocol: This position requires completion of a pre-employment medical history form to assess your ability to safely perform the essential duties of the role.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences

We will use preferred criteria screening questions:

  • Proven experience leading diverse teams. Emphasis on developing and motivating staff by creating a culture of open communication, coaching and/or supervising personnel, including providing input to or creating performance evaluations and staff schedules.
  • Experience leading meetings, creating agendas, and/or developing training materials.
  • Providing customer service and resolving complex customer service issues in a library setting; being person in charge in absence of a manager or supervisor
  • Technology skills to include knowledge of Integrated Library System (ILS), office equipment, mobile apps, MS Office software and troubleshooting computer hardware and peripherals.

The applications of those individuals meeting the minimum qualifications will be reviewed to determine the extent, relevancy of training, and experience in the following areas:

  1. Providing direct service to customers.
  2. Programming for a wide range of audiences that might include teens, adults, older adults and the disability community.

  4. Familiarity with integrated library systems, online databases, and other electronic resources to locate material, place holds, search indices.

Technical Services

Frostburg State University, Lewis J. Ort Library, seeks applications for a full-time, faculty level position as the Head of Technical Services. Salary commensurate with experience; University System of Maryland benefits package included.

Frostburg State University seeks a dynamic, forward-thinking, collaborative individual with demonstrated experience and potential to provide innovative strategies for supporting student learning and scholarly research while promoting a culture of excellent service to library users.

Responsibilities: Directs all functions of the Library’s Technical Services Unit, including providing strategic direction and supervising staff fulfilling daily operations in acquisitions, serials, cataloging/metadata, and electronic resources management. Develops, implements and evaluates policies and procedures pertaining to the acquisition and access; cataloging and classification; and deselection and withdrawal of library materials. Oversees management of the library materials budget in consultation with the Director of Library Services. Manages critical components of the electronic resources lifecycle. Performs original and copy cataloging and establishes local descriptive metadata standards. Oversees the maintenance and integrity of the library’s online bibliographic and associated records in the USMAI Library Consortium shared integrated library system. Coordinates the library’s shared print initiatives. Collects, analyzes, and reports statistics to inform evidence-based collection development decisions. Serves as a liaison to assigned academic departments. Represents the library on relevant University and system-wide committees. Engages in professional scholarship and service activities in fulfillment of University System of Maryland and

Frostburg State University promotion standards and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s in Library Science degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program. Minimum of three years of successful, progressively responsible professional experience in technical services that includes administrative or supervisory experience. Demonstrated experience with integrated library systems, discovery systems, and bibliographic utilities. The ability to catalog a broad range of subjects and formats. Working knowledge or experience with RDA and MARC21 formats, Library of Congress Classification and Subject Headings, OCLC, and authority control procedures. Working knowledge of issues related to electronic resource management. Strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with technical services workflows in an Ex Libris Alma ILS environment. Experience with collection development theory and practices in an academic library. Experience with budget management. Experience with descriptive metadata for digitized and born-digital content. Working knowledge of library analytic tools and usage data platforms. Demonstrated understanding of current trends in technical services. Record of scholarship and professional achievement appropriate for appointment in faculty rank.
