Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) is seeking highly motivated, community-oriented and collaborative Senior Librarians to serve as Branch Supervisor to provide excellent customer service and equalized opportunity for Montgomery County residents. Our Senior Librarians supervise staff, serve as system trainers, and participate as members of planning and implementation workgroups.  

MCPL Librarians perform a variety of professional programs and services reflective of, and responsive to community needs and assets. Librarians develop and deliver inclusive and equitable, community-led programs and services. These positions represent MCPL within the community, building collaborative relationships, programs, and services in partnership with community members and organizations. Librarians also help to manage MCPL materials to meet the educational, recreational and information needs of the community. These positions provide customers with basic technological and in-depth informational assistance.

Essential Duties/Major Responsibilities:

  • Promotes and supports MCPL’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion values with staff and customers. Centers the experiences of people and communities who are most affected by structural inequities when engaging in programming, partnerships, and information services work.
  • Managing a branch collection.
  • Ensure delivery of excellent customer service by guiding staff and implementing policies and solving problems.
  • Serve as a member of a branch management team, participating in planning and organizing the work of the branch.
  • Lead or assist in leading the day-to-day operations of a library branch.
  • Serve as an on-site manager or assistant manager, supervising, training, evaluating as well as coaching and mentoring staff.
  • Develop, provide, and evaluate training to a diverse staff, throughout the Department.
  • Respond directly to customer concerns, suggestions, and complaints.
  • Serve on workgroups and committees designed to encourage communication and problem solving across all levels of the organization.

THIS RECRUITMENT WILL GENERATE A 6-MONTH ELIGIBLE LIST TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANCIES FOR THE BRANCH SUPERVIOSR Full-Time POSITIONS AT ALL BRANCH LOCATIONS WITHIN MCPL.

Hours for this position are:

Library hours of operation are 7 days a week including evenings. Employees are expected to be available for work during these times. Individual schedules, including evenings and weekends, will vary based on branch operational needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (RELEVANT AREAS OF EXPERIENCE)

  • Education: Master’s degree in library science or library information science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association. 
  • Equivalency: No equivalency applies. 
  • Experience: 4 years of professional library experience.
  • Licensure: Employees will be responsible for maintaining appropriate level of contact hours to sustain State licensure requirements for this position.

Preferred Criteria:

The applications of those individuals meeting the minimum qualifications will be reviewed to determine the extent, relevancy of training, and experience in the following areas: 

  1. Leading diverse teams, coaching and/or supervising personnel, including providing input to or creating performance evaluations and staff schedules
  2. Developing, conducting, and evaluating staff training and planning and/or leading meetings
  3. Providing customer service and resolving complex customer service issues in a library setting; being the person in charge in absence of a manager or supervisor
  4. Managing a project or similar assignment

The initial compensation for this position generally falls between $57,934.50 and $60,831.23, contingent upon relevant experience and qualifications.

Job summary:

Manages, directs, and participates in the daily operations and activities of the Adult Department in a full-service library, including supervision of assigned staff, collection maintenance, programming, and information service; performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education/Experience:            

Bachelor’s degree required

Requires 90 contact hours of approved in-service training through Library Associate Training Institute (LATI) within first 2 years of employment or 9 hours of formal academic course work in library science.

Three or more years experience, including at least one year of supervisory experience and at least one of which involves working with adults. 

MLIS degree preferred (LATI not required.

Must be willing to receive US Department of State Passport Acceptance Agent Training within 90 days of hire and actively participate in passport services.
