The University Librarian works with the head of collections and the subject librarians on the analysis and evaluation of current collections and their formats. They meet with the deans, department chairs, and faculty regularly to discuss their needs for library resources and services. The University Librarian is also responsible for providing leadership along with other offices and units for digital and information fluencies. The University Librarian actively participates in the Virtual Library of Virginia consortium (VIVA) and serves as a representative to the Library Advisory Committee. In addition, they support efforts to foster diversity and inclusion in library, university, and professional contexts.
Simpson Library has a collection of 375,000 physical volumes, 450,000 e-books, 200 databases, 130,000 streaming videos, and 100,000 journals and an extensive array of electronic information resources. The library is an active participant in VIVA, a selective depository for U.S. and Virginia publications, and an essential resource for the central Virginia region.

Purpose and Understanding of the Organization
The University Libraries form an intellectual nexus for George Mason University. The Libraries foster innovation, creativity, and imagination by facilitating access to scholarship and information, providing expert consultation in the research process, and actively teaching the effective and critical use of information. The Libraries also fulfill a critical role in the creation, dissemination, and preservation of knowledge.
The Learning, Research, and Engagement Division (LRE) of the University Libraries has primary responsibility for the spectrum of services and programs related to the outward-focused, direct engagement with undergraduate and graduate students and faculty pertaining to teaching, learning, and research, including the assessment (in conjunction with the Libraries’ Assessment and Planning Office) of such services and programs.
Through the three disciplinary teams of subject specialist librarians (Arts & Humanities, STEM, and Social Sciences, the latter two based at – and inclusive of the staff of – the libraries at the Prince William and Arlington campuses, respectively), the LRE division works continuously with individual faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates on their individual learning and research needs by working closely with academic departments and colleges.
About the Position:
The Education Librarian is responsible for all subject instruction, reference assistance and consultations, outreach, and collection development for the College of Education and Human Development, the Department of Higher Education program in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and other assigned departments and/or programs. The Education Librarian also serves as a subject resource to other librarians, contributes to the development and support of initiatives within the University Libraries, consults with and builds relationships with assigned School and department faculty, contributes to the provision of Libraries’ general public services at Fenwick Library, and supports University and Libraries scholarly communication initiatives.
The position reports to the Lead, Social Sciences Team, and Mason Square Library.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Serves as the subject librarian for the College of Education and Human Development, the Higher Education program in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and other assigned subject areas, providing research and reference support, instruction, collection development, and outreach to those programs and subject areas;
Develops strategies and tools to assess the effectiveness of instruction and outreach activities;
Participates in collection development activities in assigned areas, including assessing existing collections, maintaining deep subject knowledge of assigned collection development areas, and spending allocated funds appropriately to build depth and breadth;
Develops print and online format information and instruction materials for assigned subject areas;
Engages with and contributes to the development and assessment of programs and services at Fenwick and throughout the Libraries as a whole;
Provides face-to-face, telephone, e-mail, online, and other forms of reference service;
Participates and serves on committees, task forces, projects, etc., within the Mason University Libraries, the campus, the university, and as appropriate, the community;
Contributes to Social Sciences team shared activities and projects;
Seeks, considers, and communicates diverse perspectives and ideas; and
Participates in professional development and/or scholarly activities to enhance professional skills and contribute to the profession and body of knowledge.
Appointment / Benefits / Salary:
12-month professional faculty appointment with rank; health plan options and paid life insurance; several retirement plans, including TIAA-CREF; 24 vacation days and 12 paid holidays; tuition waiver for self. Salary is commensurate with professional experience and academic qualifications. Salary at appointment is dependent upon rank: Librarian I (not less than $65,000), Librarian II (not less than $70,000), Librarian III (not less than $75,000), and Librarian IV (not less than $80,000).

ALA-accredited MLS or ALA-recognized foreign equivalent;
Masters degree in education, or equivalent training and experience providing library services to users in one or all of those areas;

About the Position:
This position has an essential leadership role in the Mason Square Library. In working with the Head of the Library, this position ensures appropriate goals are set and met in relation to facilities management, collaboration with campus and intercampus administrative and support units, and staff supervision.
Responsibilities:
Coordinate and manage all access services in the Mason Square Library including circulation, stacks, serials, document delivery, course reserves, and basic computing;
Supervise and evaluate access services classified and student wages staff;
Collaborate with other access services personnel at other University Libraries sites to ensure consistency in the implementation of circulation and access services policies;
Serve as the primary contact for the library for facilities, campus police, and campus administration in carrying out daily business operations; and
Oversees day to day operations (general administrative activities, facilities issues, computer stations, supplies and equipment, desk and staff schedules, statistics and reports, circulation/access services)
Required Qualifications:
The following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities are required:
Bachelor’s degree required or significant equivalent library experience (typically 3+ years);
Substantial knowledge of library public services experiences, particularly circulation services;
Proficiency with relevant, current computer software and support on various computer operation systems (e.g. Windows, MS Office suite, etc.);

Project, service, and/or program management experience;
Successful experience supervising, training, and mentoring other staff members and/or student employees;
Basic working knowledge of bookkeeping;
