Position: Middle School Library Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY: The Walter Lord Library is the heart of the Middle School and serves as the premiere place for research instruction and support, as well as book recommendations. The Middle School community relies on the Library team to provide a wide range of support, inspiration, enrichment activities, and programming. Working with the Librarian, the Library Assistant will maintain a vibrant and welcoming space for students and support the Library’s mission to empower students to be critical thinkers, effective and ethical users and producers of ideas and information, and lifelong readers and learners. The Library program strives to help develop men of character and integrity who have the skills and ability to make a positive contribution to the communities in which they live and work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Programming:

  • Plan and organize all calendars related to Library programs
  • Craft and send all Library daily and weekly communication
  • Assist in planning Book Fair
  • Assist with special projects, programs, and clubs

Reading and Research Instruction:

  • Assist students and teachers with reader’s advisory and circulation
  • Locate, check out, and make available all items across libraries
  • Create and manage subject resource lists using Library catalog
  • Assist with MS Supplementary Reading Program

Library Space Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and help Middle School students and faculty while using the library, including early morning access to the library and afternoon study hall
  • Create material displays and educational bulletin boards
  • Monitor office and book repair supplies; order as needed

Collection Management Responsibilities:

  • Check-in, shelve items; process new books, examine materials and withdraw or repair as needed
  • Generate and distribute overdue notices; bill for lost library items
  • Assist in maintaining an organized and up-to-date catalog and circulation system
  • Track student and faculty book recommendations and create material order lists

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Technology experience: Library catalog systems, Google products, database management, graphic design software, and web searching
  • Self starter with initiative and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at once
  • Team player
  • Previous library experience in a PK-12 school setting preferred

Position: Library Technician (Federal Library)
Location: Cadence Group

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interlibrary loan work, processing orders and sending materials to other libraries, tracking ILLs to make sure they are recorded and within the CONTU Guidelines
  • Track loaned and borrowed materials to insure timely return through Integrated Library Systems (ILS)
  • Answer patron questions; provide orientation and support for in-processing patrons
  • Process library materials, including preparing and updating shelf lists
  • Identify and prepare library materials for binding
  • Provide integrated library system support
  • Perform basic literature searches as well as animal protocol searches
  • Scan micro-film, operate microfilm machine
  • Troubleshoot basic technology issues related to EndNote and Online Resources
  • Register staff for access to databases and other online services; organize routine training for staff members
  • Perform copy cataloging and original cataloging
  • Provide circulation and ready reference support
  • Prepare requisitions or other procurement documents for purchase of library materials
  • Prepare multi-media and/or paper-based presentations

REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. Citizenship mandatory
  • Must have 3 years specialized experience in a library that provides general knowledge of library rules, policies, and procedures for circulation and technical service including library systems, procedures, and theory (16 credits in library science may be substituted for specialized experience)
  • Must have experience or training that demonstrates knowledge of Integrated Library Systems (ILS), library applications, and other information technologies
  • Archival knowledge highly desired
  • Must be familiar with DOCLINE and OCLC WorldShare
  • Must be able to adapt quickly/change gears on a dime in a fast-paced and constantly changing work environment
  • An Associate Degree from recognized college or technical institute

Highly Desired:

  • Experience performing medical or scientific research
  • Experience with EOS integrated library system
  • Experience developing LibGuides
  • Experience working in a federal library
