About the Position:
The Music and Media Librarian is responsible for all subject specific instruction, reference assistance and research consultations, outreach, and collection development for the Dewberry School of Music, the Film and Video Studies program, and to serve as domain expert for Media (including audiovisual, music audio media and generally media streaming). The position is located in Fenwick Library, which also houses the circulating music collection, the music reference collection, all musical scores, and the University Libraries’ analog media collections. This position will provide leadership in the University Libraries in the selection, curation, preservation, and scope of media collections. The Music and Media Librarian will be the subject specialist in the areas of media creation, editing, and instruction; and will provide advice on the use of media content by collaborating with the Mason Publishing Group, as well as instructional faculty, subject librarians, the Online Learning Coordinator & Instructional Librarian, students, and administrators.
As a member of the Arts and Humanities Team, the Music and Media Librarian also serves as a subject resource to other librarians, contributes to the development and support of initiatives within the University Libraries, consults with and builds relationships with assigned School and department faculty, contributes to the provision of Libraries’ general public services, and supports university and Libraries scholarly communication initiatives.
- Serves as subject librarian for the Dewberry School of Music and the Film and Video Studies program, providing research and reference support, instruction, collection development, and outreach to those programs and subject areas;
- Provides expertise to subject librarian colleagues regarding selection of resources in all media formats;
- Works collaboratively with the Libraries’ Digital Technologies and Services unit and other information technology units in the university to evaluate and implement new media technologies, and maintain and troubleshoot existing media technologies at the Libraries;
- Collaborates with the Metadata Services group to ensure that appropriate metadata standards are being used in order to assist users with their resource discovery needs in regards to music and media related items;
- Works closely with Access Services to determine circulation policies in regards to Music and Media collections and equipment, and provides guidance to Access and Resource Management division staff and others who are responsible for managing media and music collections, circulation, equipment, and media course reserves;
- Oversees the physical and streaming media collections, including the restricted media collection, to ensure they meet best practices and curricular and co-curricular needs of the University’s faculty, staff, and students;
- Develops strategies and tools to assess the effectiveness of instruction and outreach activities;
- Participates in collection development activities assigned subject areas, including assessing existing collections, maintaining deep subject knowledge of assigned collection development areas, and spending allocated funds appropriately to build depth and breadth;
- Develops print and online format information and instruction materials for assigned subject areas;
- Engages with and contributing to the development and assessment of programs and services at Fenwick and throughout the Libraries as a whole;
- Provides face-to-face, telephone, e-mail, online, and other forms of reference service;
- Participates and serves on committees, task forces, projects, etc., within the Mason University Libraries, the campus, the university, and, as appropriate, the community;
- Contributes to Arts & Humanities Team shared activities and projects;
- Seeks, considers and communicates diverse perspectives and ideas; and
- Participates in professional development and/or scholarly activities to enhance professional skills and contribute to the profession and body of knowledge.
Applicants should bring the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to this position:
- ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science OR an equivalent certified foreign degree;
- A Bachelor’s degree in music and/or equivalent broad knowledge and training in music librarianship;
- Ability to read music;
- Demonstrated professional experience (generally 2+ years) as a librarian;
- Experience in providing responsive and quality reference, instruction, digital and collaborative library research services; as well as practical understanding of the changing research needs of students and faculty; experience in developing, building, and sustaining working relationships with teaching faculty, researchers, and students;
- Experience with collection development in music, film studies, and/or media; knowledge of relevant vendors and publishers;
- Demonstrated ability to advocate and promote library resources and services to a variety of constituents;
- Understanding of emerging trends and technologies in digital literacy/information literacy and music librarianship through research, practice, and other professional development activities; understanding of issues related to copyright and licensing of streaming media;
- Demonstrated ability to use current technologies for delivering and developing library services;
- Demonstrated, effective communication skills, both oral and written;
- Ability to work within a collaborative team environment in a distributed library and university setting;
- Ability to build collaborative and mutually beneficial working relationships with people of varying backgrounds; and
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development and growth.
The following education and/or skill sets are preferred:
- Training and/or experience in providing media services;
- Experience with building and maintaining a physical and streaming media collection; and
- Knowledge of and familiarity with Digital Humanities methodologies and research.
12-month Professional Faculty appointment with rank; health plan options and paid life insurance; several retirement plans, including TIAA-CREF; 24 vacation days and 12 paid holidays; tuition waiver for self. Salary is commensurate with academic qualifications, professional experience, and rank, with an anticipated appointment salary, dependent on rank, as follows: Librarian I, $62,500 – $67,500; Librarian II, $67,500 – $72,500; Librarian III, $72,500 – $77,500; and Librarian IV, $77,500+.
