The George Mason University Libraries is seeking a skillful, and collaborative person for the position of Biomedical Librarian. About the Position:

This is a new position assigned to the Libraries’ Science and Technology team. The team serves the College of Engineering and Computing, the College of Health and Human Services, and the College of Science, as well as several STEM-H multi-disciplinary university-level institutes and centers. Within the team, the programmatic role of the Biomedical Librarian is to assist with planning and related support to ready the University Libraries for provision of library resources and services in support of the university’s eventual medical education goal and, concurrently, provide biomedical subject librarian expertise and support mainly for the university’s pre-medical and related programs, including: instruction, reference, research consultation, collection development, and academic outreach. Additional duties will extend to such areas as research data support for faculty and students, grant assistance for faculty, and other subject liaison assignment(s) within the scope of the three aforementioned colleges and STEM-H institutes/centers.

The incumbent in this position will collaborate with the Libraries’ Digital Scholarship Center, the Mason Publishing Group, and the Collections Strategy unit, as well as with other library departments more broadly and across the university to support research and data efforts, methods, and tools.


  • Generally, the Biomedical Librarian will coordinate, shape, and deliver resources and services by:
  • Using outreach strategies for developing relationships with faculty and researchers that optimize the impact of library expertise, services and resources;
  • Applying knowledge of trends and tools in information technology to service delivery and design of interdisciplinary projects;
  • Developing library collections in relevant disciplines and sub-disciplines, and supporting initiatives in open access, open science, and open data;
  • Teaching in the library program on critical information and research skills, helping students achieve academic success, and understanding the social consequences of how data and information are used, created, and shared;
  • Helping researchers find and manage information and data, and critically evaluating and using research tools, platforms, and infrastructure;
  • Engaging in systematic, ongoing learning activities to build skills for professional impact and cultural competence; and
  • Participating in or leading project(s) of the Science and Technology team and fostering team outcomes by using best practice tools and techniques.

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants should bring the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to this position.
  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science program OR an equivalent combination of education and experience OR an equivalent certified foreign degree;
  • Some (generally two (2)+ years) experience working as a Biology, Bioengineering, Biomedical, or general STEM-H Librarian;
  • Experience providing library instruction and research support in STEM-H that support the educational goals of a multicultural student population;
  • Demonstrated experience with electronic resources and information technologies to support reference, research, and collection development in biology or health sciences/medical related or other STEM-H disciplines;
  • Experience collaborating with instructional faculty to help students achieve learning outcomes such as information literacy, written communication, problem solving, critical thinking and integrative learning;
  • Development of strategies for doing outreach and building relationships with faculty to deliver high impact services and resources, and capacity to adapt outreach skills to the Mason Libraries context;
  • Experience with key information resources in a variety of scientific disciplines, including resources for data discovery, data literacy, or library services that support data management and analysis;
  • Familiarity with research trends and with ethical, legal, and policy issues in the broader biomedical and health sciences areas;
  • Ability to build collaborative and mutually beneficial working relationships with people of varying backgrounds; and
  • Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in our workplace, as well as in the systems and services we build, as an inclusive excellence imperative.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The following education and/or skill sets are preferred:
  • Bachelor’s OR strongly preferred advanced degree in Biology, Bioengineering or health sciences related field, OR significant coursework in those areas; and
  • Knowledge of data management planning, scholarly communications, and open access concepts and trends.


12-month professional faculty appointment with rank; health plan options and paid life insurance; several retirement plans, including TIAA-CREF; 24 vacation days and 12 paid holidays; tuition waiver for self. Salary is commensurate with academic qualifications, professional experience, and rank; however this position is funded at a “junior” level and, therefore, the appointment salary range is anticipated as follows: Librarian I: low $60s – $65K; and Librarian II: $65 – $70K.
