Based on training and established rules, independently resolves technical questions and difficult questions, and issues by identifying copyright facts such as title, author(s), claimant(s), registration number and/or the effective date of registration from existing historical hard copy copyright records. These may include card catalogs, record books or other materials when such facts may or may not be clearly labeled or obvious, or when the source material is not kept in the proper or expected location. Identifies and corrects errors found in index records which may include incorrect titles/author names, typographical errors in the registration numbers/names/Titles, and/or descriptive notes in citations.

Applies the rules and methods originally used to create the various records in order to identify the required metadata information. Records differ substantially in format, content, organization, and legibility among six distinct time periods or bands of record keeping dating to the beginning of copyright in the United States and also according to the title, author or claimant category of the record. Consults multiple records per registration if multiple authors and/or claimants are present. Independently determines the most likely location to search for misplaced records prior to performing the search.

Uses a combination of common and proprietary software applications to create digital records of paper based records and to create a representative and accurate record that is searchable. Independently applies a comprehensive knowledge of digital resources to get consistent, accurate, searchable records.

Library Section Supervisor

The City of Falls Church is recruiting for an experienced Library Section Supervisor for the Technical Services Section of the Mary Riley Styles Library in Falls Church, Virginia.


Plan and organize all Technical Services work for the Library to include, but not limited to, acquisitions, cataloging, and work with the integrated library system (ILS), which is Innovative Interfaces, Inc.

Review, select, and maintain several areas in the adult non-fiction collection (currently the 400s, adult biographies, DVD documentaries, and Teaching Company materials)

Evaluate current collections and research and plan for new and emerging materials and formats

Work with library wholesale book, media, and periodical jobbers (ex. Baker & Taylor, WT Cox etc.) placing orders, troubleshooting orders and cancelations, and maintaining relationships with them

Knowledge of and ability to use Microsoft Office products and software like BookWhere and downloading of eMaterial records

Monitor and work with selectors about the high holds, patron suggestions, and best seller lists

Extensive knowledge of MARC records, and familiarity with RDA cataloging and knowledge of Biblioframe

Supervise and evaluate two full time employees and one part time employee and administer and prepare tasks for the adult volunteer program with approximately 20 people participating weekly

Oversee the ongoing library used book sale and work with volunteers to set up and dismantle a monthly special book sale

Prepare the section budget and monitor all expenditures for the section

Develop Technical Services policies, make procedural and budget decisions within that area’s budget

Serve on the library’s Management Team, making suggestions about policies and procedures for the library as a whole

Participate in regional and state Technical Services groups and appropriate listservs and monitor the user groups for the ILS

Prepare a variety of monthly statistical reports concerning section activities and special reports as necessary for City, region, and State (includes such things as collection and cataloging statistics, volunteer hours) and run reports as needed from the ILS

Create posts for social media about the library’s collection, events, and other items of interest

Serve on various City and Council of Government as well as state committees representing the library of Falls Church

In charge of the building and staff on nights and weekends in absence of more senior staff
