The Research Library provides many services: research, reference, TS, news and research alerts, technical services, a print collection, archives, briefings, orientations, and trainings. Supporting these services is a collection that includes print and electronic sources: books, periodicals, documents, maps, multimedia materials, database subscriptions, a Bloomberg terminal, a large selection of Internet sources, and EXIM?s legislative history.

Specific subject areas of interest include: emerging markets, risk management and due diligence, international trade, finance, economics, banking, accounting, government, business, and law.

The Research Library environment is fast-paced; turnaround time for reference requests can be as fast as within minutes, to several days, depending on the complexity of the question. Nearly all work in the Research Library is web-and e-mail-based. Typical reference or research requests can include:

Position: Library Technician

This position is located in the Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology, National Museum of American History (NMAH), Smithsonian Libraries (SIL), Smithsonian Institution (SI) in Washington, D.C.

Under the general direction of the Head of Special Collections as a Special Collections Library Technician of the Dibner Library (SCLTDL) you will provide technical and reference assistance in the management, maintenance, and service functions of the Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology. You will participate as member of an integrated special collections program and contribute to the overall goals of a major research library. In addition, you will also perform similar duties in the Joseph E. Cullman 3RD Library of Natural History when required.

The Dibner Library holds the Smithsonian’s collection of rare books in science and technology. Its world-class collection contains approximately 35,000 volumes mostly published before 1840 in the fields of physical sciences, mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, magnetism, electricity, astronomy, scientific instrumentation, and related fields. The collection is rich in incunabula, first editions and includes close to 2,000 manuscript groups.
