Chief Public Service Officer

This is a professional, senior level position requiring the ability to supervise all areas relating to the libraries’ public service operations.

Responsibilities include:

assuring quality library experiences for our members & visitors in all locations and departments including our bookmobile

overseeing staff development and statistics maintenance

working with our staff to continue our practice of developing new, innovative programming.

The successful candidate will hold an ALA accredited MLS/MLIS with 5-7 years of public library experience and 3-5 years’ experience as a supervisor in public services, circulation or outreach. They will demonstrate a desire to support the front line staff of the library, a working knowledge of current public service best practices, an ability to maintain effective working relationships with public and staff, and the capability of working independently as well as part of a team. Mastery of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required. The ability to successfully multi-task, to solve problems, negotiate difficult situations and make sound decisions is also needed. Above all, the successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence and quality service.

Manuscripts and Archives Librarian

The George Mason University Libraries seeks a creative and energetic, experienced and technologically sophisticated professional for the position of Manuscripts and Archives Librarian.

The incumbent is responsible for the arrangement and description of all archival and manuscript collections within the libraries’ Special Collections Research Center, including the University Archives. S/he will manage the accessioning process (including visiting and meeting with collection donors), determine arrangement schemas and apply descriptive best practices to promote access to collections; supervise full-time and part-time employees in processing and digitizing collections; be responsible in managing (in concert with the libraries’ Preservation Librarian) collection care and preservation activity related to the manuscript and archival collections. Such collections include materials in all formats, including many forms of media as well as digital formats.

The incumbent shall collaborate on creating and maintaining MARC records and Dublin Core metadata, EAD for electronic finding aids, and digital access to collections (in concert with the Digital Collections Archivist); participates in outreach, physical and digital exhibitions, programs, and other public services as appropriate; and helps others to increase their awareness and acceptance of cultural differences.
