Nature of Work
Under the direction of the Library Director and as a member of the management team, supervises the activities of youth department. Some of the duties for this position include: provides guidance for and coordinates programs for children, young adults, parents and caregivers to encourage early literacy, reading, viewing, listening skills and the use of library facilities and materials; coordinates the development of youth services policies and provides interpretations when needed; coordinates and follows through on ordering all materials for children’s collections; participates in all planning for the county with input from youth services staff, maintains awareness of trends in youth services and issues affecting youth and communicates such to staff; plans, directs or carries out grant projects; actively participates in youth programming assisting the branches; participates in county and regional teams. This position requires some evenings and weekends depending upon the scheduling needs of the branch and community or professional meetings.
Requisites
• Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent degree/experience in education.
• Five (5) years or more of responsible experience as a professional librarian in youth services.
• Extensive knowledge of current trends in library service to children and teens.
• Knowledge of children’s and teen literature and materials
• Knowledge of the principles of library administration, planning, coordination and budgeting.
• Ability to work with children, teens and their caregivers.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement services to children and teens
• Commitment to participate in regional, State, and national organizations that advance the cause of libraries.
• Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate others.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, planning, analytical, and creative skills.
• Excellent customer service skills.

Position: Reference Librarian I (Full-time) position

The Washington County Free Library in Hagerstown, MD is seeking a FT- Reference Librarian I for the Adult Services Dept. located at 100 S. Potomac Street, Hagerstown, MD 21740. This position includes benefits. Hours may vary and will include some daytime and evening hours, some Saturdays, and occasional Sundays. Successful candidate must be public service oriented and knowledgeable about the latest library trends and services. Requirements: Master of Library Science from an ALA accredited institution. General knowledge of professional library principles, procedures, materials, and good knowledge of books and authors. Ability to communicate clearly, orally, in writing, and in a classroom setting. Must have excellent computer skills, a positive interpersonal style; ability to work independently and as part of a team; strong organizational skills; strong ability to adjust to change; flexibility and initiative.
