Engineering Reference Librarian
THE POSITION: Nimitz Library, U.S. Naval Academy, is seeking a dynamic, tech-savvy Reference and Instruction Librarian with a science or engineering background to serve as library liaison for faculty and midshipmen in engineering disciplines. The main responsibilities of the Engineering Librarian include: planning, teaching and assessing information literacy sessions, providing in-person, by phone, and virtual research assistance, and serving as subject specialist for faculty and midshipmen in engineering. Engineering has a central role in educating midshipmen to address the technical needs of the Navy and Marine Corps. It is a required part of the curriculum, and there are several engineering departments with a variety of majors at the Naval Academy. The incumbent in this General Schedule (GS grade 9/GS grade 11) position reports to the Head of Reference and Instruction and works closely with colleagues in the ongoing development of Nimitz Library as an exemplary 21st-century academic library.
THE LIBRARY: Nimitz Library (http://www.usna.edu/Library ) has a dedicated staff of 18 librarians, 11 library technicians, and part-time student aides. The print collection of approximately 600,000 books and bound periodicals is complemented by a depository government documents collection, e-book collections, numerous online databases, and rich collections in the Special Collections and Archives Department.
THE U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY: USNA, founded in 1845, is the Navy’s undergraduate college, with 4,500 students, approximately 500 military and civilian faculty, and 25 major fields of study in three academic divisions.

Garrett College seeks a dynamic and experienced leader with the understanding of the evolving role of the Library and Learning Commons Model. Reporting to the Vice President for Instruction and Student Services, the Director will manage the internal operations of the Learning Commons which should offer technologically enhanced learning spaces for faculty to experiment with new technologies that support innovative learning and for students to take advantage of integrated spaces and staffing for library research, writing and math centers, tutoring and testing.
The Director is responsible for planning, implementing, supervising and assessing the resources and services of the Library and Learning Commons. ZAI has an immediate need for a Systems Librarian to work at our Greenbelt, MD location. The qualified candidate will Manage and maintain the library systems to ensure successful delivery of seamless, integrated access to the Library’s resources and services, including: the integrated library system (SirsiDynix Symphony), Interlibrary Loan platform (ILLiad), the library’s institutional repository, the search and discovery tools (including electronic resource management software and link resolvers) and cataloging.
Serves as part of the library’s strategic planning team to set priorities, focus resources, strengthen operations, and fully integrate the library’s resources and services with a goal of providing an innovative research environment for the research community served by the library.
Coordinates with the Program Manager in the organization, compilation, analysis, and production of project deliverables, including monthly and weekly reports, and statistics.
Supervises the library’s systems team and manages the library’s systems and technologies.
Evaluates technologies for the library and develops recommendations (including budget and resource requirements) for new library systems, equipment and technologies.
Provides support for development and maintenance of the library’s website and associated applications.
Develops and maintains library systems documentation.
Masters of Library Science (MLS)
5 years’ experience managing an integrated library system (SirsiDynix Symphony preferred)
5 years supervisory experience and demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills
Strong analytical and organizational skills, with excellent oral and written communication skills
Knowledge of the following preferred: Drupal, Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, scripting languages, systems administration, relational databases, and web server technologies
Experience working with electronic library collections, institutional repositories, and digitization projects
Experience cataloging print and electronic materials
