Position Title: Library Associate / Librarian I – Selection, Materials Management Department
Location: Prince George’s County Memorial Library – 9601 Capital Lane, Largo, MD 20774
Hours: Full-time (40 hours/week), Mon– Fri: 8:30am – 5pm
Salary: $44k/year or $21.31/hour + generous benefits package.

Examples of Duties:
Under the supervision of the Librarian III – Selection assists in the selection of books and materials to be purchased for the library collection. Screens, evaluates, selects and orders new materials in assigned areas for central purchase; orders high demand titles pre-publication and monitors reserves in order to ensure demand is being met; reviews and revises grids annually; reviews suggestions for purchase; collaborates on purchasing with other selectors. Prepares and submits budget requests; monitors the expenditure of funds allocated. Assigns vendors for each order; communicates with vendors; assists Librarian III, Selection, and Chief of Materials Management in evaluation of vendor services. Assists with collection development; participates in the review of collection development procedures; assists other offices and departments with collection related activities and services; participates in collection related projects, training, and programming. Keeps informed of professional and community developments affecting the library field. Prepares statistical reports. Performs other duties or responsibilities that are related to the position.

Qualifications/Requirements:
Library Associate II: Possession of Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university; completion of the Maryland State Library Associate Training Institute (LATI) or six (6) hours of formal course work in library science from an accredited program; and two (2) years of experience as a Library Associate I. Librarian I: Possession of a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program. Experience in assigned area of selection, including knowledge of publishing and of vendor tools and print resources used in the selection of assigned materials. Experience with Integrated Library Systems, POLARIS preferred, and skill in using MS Office products, especially WORD and EXCEL. Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain accurate records and statistics and prepare accurate reports. Ability to plan, develop and deliver in-service training. Ability to meet deadlines. Accuracy and attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse staff and external contacts. Work involves extensive sitting and use of computer; reaching, stooping, bending, grasping and moving objects; use of a telephone and other office equipment.

Necessary Special Requirement:
Library Associate II: Completion of the Maryland State Library Associate Training Institute (LATI) or six (6) hours of formal course work in library science from an accredited program; and ability to maintain eligibility by completing 90 hours of training every five (5) years. Librarian I: Ability to secure certification as a Professional Public Librarian in the State of Maryland within six-months following appointment; and ability to meet re-certification requirements by completing 90 hours of training every five (5) years.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Library Director is responsible for the overall, strategic, and day-to-day operations of the library system. Essential functions include:

Manage the operating and capital budgets, grants, and gift accounts.
Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality, seamless customer service.
Act as primary point of contact and work with government officials, including development of agenda items relating to policy changes.
Represent and be an effective, visible library leader in the community and attend community events.
Develop and communicate a shared vision of future library services and work collaboratively with the Library Board, the Friends of the Library, the Library Foundation, the staff, and other key stake holders in achieving library goals and objectives.
Appoint, manage and mentor library staff, provide direct supervision to department heads and foster a team environment.
Study local communities and current library methods and modify the library system to meet community needs and professional standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Master’s degree in Library Science and eligibility to obtain a Maryland Public Library Certification. Seven to ten years of library experience is preferred (an equivalent combination of technical training and related experience will be considered).

This position is located in the Defense Media Activity (DMA), which is a Department of Defense (DoD) field activity reporting to the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Public Affairs). The DMA is a worldwide media organization employing state-of-the-art and emerging multi-media production and distribution technologies and operates from multiple locations in the US and overseas and with deployed combat and contingency forces throughout the world.

As a Librarian you will be responsible for the following duties:

Direct the operations and activities of the Library.

Establishes goals, policies and procedures and resolves any problems or complaints arising out of service provided be the Library to staff, faculty and students.

Prepares purchase orders, makes purchases through the use of the Interagency Agreement with Library of Congress and tracks all expenditures.

Apprises the Chief, Training and Management Branch on collection development to maintain a well-balanced collection pertinent to academic, professional, administrative and instructional needs of patrons served.
