JOB SUMMARY:

The Commerce Research Library is looking for a smart, energetic, and innovative individual to serve as a Business Librarian. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience which requires advanced research, analytical & writing skills, attention to detail, and a fearless approach to developing new customers and collaborative relationships.

The Business Librarian position is located in the Office of General Counsel, Commerce Research Library. The mission of the Commerce Research Library is to meet the evolving business and legal research needs of the Department of Commerce. The Commerce Research Library offers a complete range of library services: legal and business research & reference; research database procurement & administration; training, events, & outreach; online services such as a website, eBooks, and digitized collections; and a specialized print collection of books, legal materials, and archival materials. The library serves patrons throughout the Department of Commerce’s Downtown DC headquarters, across the country, and overseas.

The Business Librarian position is an opportunity to build a new business research specialty within the Commerce Research Library that will help meet the business research needs of the Department of Commerce. While the ideal candidate is an experienced business researcher, conducting reference and research is not the primary responsibility of the role. Rather, the Business Librarian’s primary responsibilities will be to assess patrons’ business information needs, procure print and digital business content to meet those needs, and advise and instruct DOC staff on the best sources and methods for conducting their own research. In addition, the Business Librarian will join the rest of the staff in running a wide variety of events that are held in the library.

A one-year probationary/trial period may be required.
