Position: Web Application Librarian (full-time, 35 hours/week)

Position Summary: The libraries of The Catholic University of America have as their purpose to support and enrich the instructional, research, and service programs of the university. Electronic Resources and Services is responsible for providing the technology and resources necessary for quality instruction and research, acquisition of electronic resources, organizing and maintaining the access to the electronic resources, creating and managing the local digital resources, and developing and overseeing the libraries public and staff Web sites.

This position will report to the Head of Electronic Resources & Services, supporting the delivery and discovery of library collections by designing, developing, managing, configuring, and supporting the Libraries’ websites, digital collections, discovery systems, and other digital initiatives. The individual will provide technical and operational support for web services in the CUA Libraries, as well as participate in training and support of staff and users.

Essential Responsibilities Include: Develop, code, test, and debug web applications, tools and services (new and existing); create integration with vendor-based APIs and web services; produce and update technical documentation; research and utilize emerging web technologies, principles, and standards, and identify emerging technologies that have potential for new and improved library services; participate in the strategic planning for the Libraries’ website and the initiatives and priorities of the library systems. Collect and analyze user behavior data and conduct user testing to inform design decisions.

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s Degree required (MLS, MSIS). Must be American Library Association Accredited or recognized equivalent. Experience developing applications for libraries; familiarity with Unix/Linux environments. One (1) year demonstrated experience in web design and development, with HTML, CSS and web design principles. Knowledge and one (1) year of experience with database technologies (such as MySQL, Oracle, and the SQL language). One (1) year knowledge and experience with JQuery, JavaScript and PHP programming languages.

Preferred Qualifications: Two (2) years’ experience in library preferred.

ASRC librarians, records managers and support staff collect, organize and maintain library and records materials; assist EPA and external customers with document delivery/ILL, reference and research services, etc.

Key Role:

Provide professional level (Librarian) support in the areas of reference services, information management, patron outreach and communication regarding available library services and resources.
Participate in workgroups supporting library network cooperation, services improvement, and staff/patron current awareness and training.
Provide consultation on and participate in the provision of librarian services and update/maintain procedures documentation.
Participate in Library Network Activities, which may include participating as a member of various workgroups supporting collaborative services, digitization, outreach, and other topics requiring input form professional librarian staff.
Coordinate reference desk staffing schedules, review of materials dispersal lists and selection of materials to add to the collection, as well as reference and bibliographic searching for patrons.
Prepare weekly and monthly statistical and narrative reports on reference services and progress; preparing other reports as needed.

Basic Qualifications:

A Master’s degree in Library Science or equivalent, and 2-4 years of professional level experience
Minimum two years experience providing professional librarian services in the field of chemistry or allied fields such as toxicology, medical science, environmental science, biology, etc.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in person and in writing
Demonstrated ability to work successfully independently and within a team environment.
Proficiency with spreadsheets, databases, and office applications.
Experience in preparing analytic reports and statistics, use of applications such as Excel, and development of logical expressions and database queries.     
Proficiency with web searching and research.
Experience using knowledgebase management and customer resource management applications.
Experience in customer service, library services required.
US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status and ability to pass a government sponsored background check

Additional Qualifications:

Experience in preparing analytic reports and statistics, use of applications such as Business Objects, and development of logical expressions and database queries.

Train subject matter experts in the use of the application that supports the knowledgebase and user questions.
Support the preparation of statistical and analytical reports related to reference services, application management, and use of the knowledgebase resources.
Maintain lists of resources, publications, websites, etc. on various environmental topics.
Review and update standard response templates in collaboration with other reference and supervisory staff.
Review new materials for potential inclusion within the knowledgebase or for potential distribution to staff for current awareness.
Advise on the development of the upper level Agency web pages, supporting public and staff access via Internet and intranet resources.
Advise on upgrades and/or repairs to the website based on user input and comments received
Make recommendations for improvements and enhancements to the Internet and Intranet sites to increase usability and accessibility.
Participate in the team’s consultation with the client related to information management activities.
