Candidate will serve as Data Librarian and will be responsible to provide data management. The candidate will develop data extraction and integration approaches and tools for the purposes of developing ontologies, modeling and simulation tools, analytical products for dissemination, metadata analysis, curation and archiving.


Clearance: Active Top Secret, w/ SCI contingent on passing CI Poly
Education: Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Information Science (MIS). A master’s degree may be replaced with a bachelor’s degree in a Data Library Science with a focus on digital or electronic media, preferably awarded after 2007 and at least 7 years of related experience.
Experience: A thorough working understanding of, and at least five years of experience working in, the IC Intel Community. Demonstrated a high level of understanding of the data management functions.

Data Librarian must be well versed and have 5+ years of experience in:

Metadata curation
Data and metadata capture
Database management
Systems administration
Information management

This position is located in the National Transportation Library (NTL), part of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology’s (OST-R) Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). NTL was established in 1998 as a completely digital library, conceived from a need to provide national and international access to transportation information, coordinate information creation and dissemination, and provide reference services for DOT employees and stakeholders. NTL’s major digital programs are the (a) the NTL Integrated Search System, including the NTL Digital Repository, the National Transportation Data Archive and Directory of Public Transportation Datasets and Tools, and clearinghouse of transportation website; (b) the NTL web site (; and (c) other applications, consisting of homegrown, open source, and off-the-shelf software and tools. The NTL serves as a major part of the Department’s Public Access Plan, which leverages the NTL Digital Repository (NTLDR) technology platform.

Ideal Candidate: With an increased focus on data, NTL requires a professional dedicated to the issues and challenges of data curation, which involves maintaining, preserving and adding value to digital data throughout its lifecycle.
