POSITION:                                                Library Associate II, Grade 7, Full Time
Cataloging/ILL

                                                                   

LOCATION:                                               Hagerstown, Maryland at the offices of the Western Maryland Regional Library (WMRL), located at the Central Library of the Washington County Free Library (WCFL)

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:              Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.  Comprehensive knowledge of library operations normally acquired through two years of progressively increasing responsibility and work experience in a public, academic, or special library. Within two years of appointment, incumbent is required to complete a minimum of 90 hours of in-service training by completing the Maryland State Library Associate Training Institute (LATI). 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:        Under the direct supervision of the Head of Collection Development/Inter Library Loan (ILL) for Western Maryland Regional Library, performs essential library associate functions in support of cataloging, ILL, printing, and all aspects of collection acquisitions, which includes ordering, creating invoices, and receiving materials.  This position also works closely with the Head of Technical Services and the Associate Director for Western Maryland Regional Library.

 

Responsible for cataloging of WMRL materials that are distributed to the public libraries of Allegany, Garrett, and Washington County. Receives and creates invoices upon receipt of new materials. Assigns subject categories for non-print materials. Updates and maintains quality in the catalog by de-duping and upgrading records. Evaluates circulated DVDs and Audiobooks for damage and repair. Withdraws materials when appropriate.  Provides support for cataloging of large print books and non-print materials for the region’s libraries. Keeps up-to-date on new cataloging rules and procedures. Responsible for processing and updating of OCLC ILL requests. Troubleshoots day to day problems. Adapts to changing procedures and collections. Orders processing supplies. Serves on committees. Broad knowledge of public library principles, procedures, materials.

                                                                    Responsible for using a production print copier to complete large print jobs for the library systems served.  Coordinates with the equipment provider on supplies and maintenance. Prints labels and other materials as needed.  Backup for materials processing staff.

 

Provides support for reference and information service to the region’s libraries.

 

This position requires self-motivation, flexibility, and the ability to problem-solve and multi-task.  Ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing, by telephone, email, IM, and web conference.  Practices internal and external customer service skills. High level of computer and Internet literacy, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook as well as experience navigating a Windows environment.  Competent at working independently and as a member of a team. Regular job attendance and punctuality.  Must be able to physically move throughout the building and use various devices, including but not limited to telephones, computer workstations and peripherals, printers, photocopiers and fax machines. Performs a variety of duties as assigned.

                                                            Awareness of concepts relating to use of metadata including RDA, AACR2, MARC formats and Dewey Decimal Classification is preferred.  Previous experience using the Polaris Library Systems ILS and/or OCLC FirstSearch is preferred.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:         Monday – Friday schedule. Must be able to travel throughout Allegany, Garrett, and Washington counties, and may be asked to travel to meetings, events, and conferences held throughout Maryland.  Some travel may require overnights. Must hold a valid driver’s license in good standing.

 

SALARY:                                                     $39,669 starting salary. Benefits include paid vacation, paid holidays, sick and personal leave, health insurance, and participation in the State Retirement and Pension System of Maryland.
