The core of the Senior Research Specialist’s responsibility is to ensure that NAFSA staff colleagues have available to them comprehensive overviews and an up-to-date collection of research findings that underpin NAFSA’s strategic goals. To this end, the Senior Research Specialist will be required to work closely with colleagues to identify the priority areas where research results can be useful; scan appropriate sources for such research, supported by part-time graduate students; develop relationships with leading research agencies and graduate programs in our field; and prepare précis of research findings that other professionals in the association can use with their constituencies.

1. Develop an ongoing and comprehensive overview of existing and emerging research that supports NAFSA’s strategic priorities.

1.1. Regularly scan relevant research resources—journals, online reports, think tank reports, commercial research organizations—to identify relevant research, assisted by part-time graduate students.

1.2. Identify international education graduate programs and establish relationships around relevant research topics.

2. Evaluate research for its applicability, reliability and significance for the field and for NAFSA’s advocacy agenda.

2.1. Work with colleagues in professional development and public policy to assess the importance/potential impact of research reports.

2.2. Assess selected research projects regarding their reliability and significance. Note that some items will be time sensitive.

3. Collaborate with colleagues in professional development services, public policy, publications, conference services and other departments to disseminate selected research.

3.1. Write précis to describe research chosen to be disseminated to various audiences.

3.2. Identify researchers, through the networking described in #1 above, who can contribute to publications and conference sessions.

4. Lead the effort to identify gaps in research that can significantly advance our work in selected areas each year.

4.1. Work with the management team and potentially Board members and outside experts to identify key gaps for research in the field.

4.2. Produce an annual report to outline NAFSA’s “library” of research, and describe the gaps.

5. Ensure that information is disseminated to staff and other intended audiences.

5.1 Make the ongoing scan of research related to IE and the annual report with description of gaps available to staff.

5.2 Submit the final version of précis to the Management Team.
