NLM Digitization Program Librarian Position
The National Library of Medicine, the world’s largest medical library, will shortly be announcing an opening for a Librarian (GS 9-12) in the Reference and Web Services (RWS) Section of the Public Services Division. The announcement is expected to be listed later this week in USAJobs (<;). The position will be posted for five days. While the duties described in the announcement are specific to Reference and Web Services, NLM may use this posting to hire librarians in other areas. The Preservation & Collection Management Section (PCM) hopes to hire a Librarian with experience in library digitization or digital preservation programs. As NLM moves forward in its efforts to make its collections of medical texts and images more widely available to the public, an experienced and knowledgeable individual is needed to assist with the creation and management of the Library’s growing digital collections. Duties will include:

* Day to day coordination of NLM’s digitization lab. Resolves scanning problems. Oversees the scanning operation to ensure that production goals are met, collection materials are handled properly, collection security is maintained, and high quality images are produced

* Troubleshoots scanning system hardware and software issues

* Oversees quality assurance conducted immediately after scanning. Identifies and resolves problems with scanned content, including legibility and completeness of files. Compares files with original material to resolve discrepancies before files are referred for image processing and items are returned to collection storage

* Responsible for backup of raw scans and transfer of files for image processing

* Participates in planning meetings related to the NLM digitization program

* Maintains up-to-date knowledge of scanning hardware and software and makes recommendations for new equipment and software acquisitions

* Assists with managing hardware and software orders for the Preservation and Collection Management Section

* Serves as backup to the Quality Assurance Unit Head on digitization program management matters

* Assists the PCM Systems Head with quality assurance and problem solving for processed files prior to their delivery to the digital repository

* Serves as Computer Support Coordinator for the Quality Assurance Unit
