MARYLAND GENERAL ASSEMBLY

DEPARTMENT OF LEGISLATIVE SERVICES

LEGISLATIVE REFERENCE LIBRARIAN

Salary: $38,800 – $58,400

Principal duties: Provide accurate and timely research and reference service to legislators, legislative staff, department staff, state agencies and the general public; expertise in online searching and knowledge of electronic databases; write weekly bill summaries for publication during the 90 day legislative session; ability to thrive in a busy, deadline-driven environment.

Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS; excellent working knowledge of Lexis and/orWestlaw; excellent verbal and written communications skills; ability to work both independently, in teams, and under time pressures to meet deadlines; high level of interpersonal skills, flexibility and adaptability to serve a varied client group with changing priorities and deadlines; sensitivity to the political environment and the information needs of all library users; ability to work extended hours, including some weekends during the 90 day legislative session from January to April; minimum 2 years experience as a professional librarian.  Resumes that do not meet the requirements will not be considered. 

 

Work environment: The library maintains a public policy and government documents collection of 95,000 volumes and provides reference and research services in a customer oriented environment.  Employees of the Department of Legislative Services function on a non-partisan basis and by law may not engage in partisan political activities.
