POSITION VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

 

 

POSITION:                                                Head of Technical Services (Librarian II, Grade 9), Full Time

LOCATION:                                               Hagerstown, Maryland at the offices of the Western Maryland Regional Library (WMRL), located at the Central Library of the Washington County Free Library (WCFL)

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:              Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) from an American Library Association accredited school.  Comprehensive knowledge of library operations normally acquired through two years of progressively increasing responsibility and work experience in a public, academic, or special library.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:        Under the direct supervision of the Director of WCFL and the WMRL Associate Director, performs essential librarian functions to plan, initiate, coordinate, and direct Technical Services and the Western Maryland Library Partnership, a multi-county cooperative Integrated Library System used by the Western Maryland Regional Library, Washington County Free Library, and Ruth Enlow Library of Garrett County. The Head of Technical Services is a key member of the WMRL team and serves WCFL as a department manager.

 

This is a high profile position that requires enthusiasm, self-motivation, flexibility, creativity and excellent customer service skills.  Ability to multi-task and problem solve.  Ability to organize, plan, and communicate effectively in person and in writing, by telephone, email, IM, and web conference.  High level of computer and Internet literacy, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook as well as advanced experience navigating a Windows environment.  Competent at working independently and as a member of a team. A bias for innovation. Ability to stay calm under pressure.  Regular job attendance and punctuality.  Must be able to physically move throughout the building and use various devices, including but not limited to: telephones, computer workstations and peripherals, printers, photocopiers and fax machines.

 

The Head of Technical Services is responsible for ensuring that the library’s catalog holdings of physical and electronic materials are easily discoverable. The individual is responsible for planning, initiating, coordinating, and directing the various technical services activities and integrated library system software administration tasks. A keen awareness of current trends in librarianship, customer service, integrated library system technology, and technical services related to ordering, receiving, cataloging, and collection maintenance. Provides administrative leadership for WCFL’s Technical Services Department, including planning, monitoring, reporting, as well as management of staff, budget, equipment, and other resources.  The position is directly responsible for the management of bibliographic cataloging and authority control.  Knowledge of professional library principles, procedures, materials, and metadata including RDA, AACR2, MARC formats and Dewey Decimal Classification.  Previous experience using the Polaris Library Systems ILS is strongly preferred and experience using a third party system for managing statewide Interlibrary Loan is preferred.  Preference is also given for experience with RFID.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:         Day schedule with occasional evenings, early mornings and weekends. Must be able to regularly travel throughout Allegany, Garrett, and Washington counties, as well as travel to meetings, events, and conferences held throughout Maryland.  Some travel requires overnights. Must hold a valid driver’s license in good standing.  Must be able to secure a Maryland Professional Public Librarian Certificate within 120 days of employment.

 

SALARY:                                                     $47,000 starting annual salary. Benefits include paid vacation, paid holidays, sick and personal leave, health insurance, and participation in the State Retirement and Pension System of Maryland.  This position is 50% WMRL and 50% WCFL.
