The Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library at The George Washington University supports the educational, clinical, and research needs of the Schools of Medicine and Health Sciences, Public Health and Health Services, and Nursing both on campus and through distance education programs.  The Collections and Access Services department works closely with the other library divisions to provide access to the library’s resources and services. The Associate Director provides strategic visionf or collections and communicates that vision to the user community. The Library collections consist of over 1,100 electronic texts, 3,500 journals, and 100 databases in addition to print collections of approximately 28,000 items.

 

Position Summary:  Reporting to the Director, this senior management position coordinates the Collections and Access Services management team, including collection development, acquisitions, serials, electronic resources and their management, cataloging and authority control, collection maintenance, the integrated library system, access, circulation, the faculty publications database, and reserves.  This position also manages the materials budget, facilities planning, and all personnel issues for Collections and Access Services.

This position plays a major role in planning, implementing, and evaluating systems and other major projects as well as in the overall planning and management of the Library.  Areas of increasing significance for this position include the identification and compilation of usage and collection statistics, the promotion and appropriate utilization of electronic resources, tracking of scholarly communication issues, assessment of emerging technologies in information delivery, coordination of departmental documentation, and promotion and growth of the institutional repository.

 

The Associate Director, Collections and Access Services, is crucial to promoting good library relations and teamwork through strong oral and written communications skills.  The position works closely with all Library functional areas, including information, instructional, and educational technology services, as well as other GW libraries, GW committees and offices, and student representatives to assure effective delivery of products and services.  The incumbent also coordinates relationships with research and educational affiliates and contracts.

 

Specific duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:

 

 

  • Coordination of the Collection and Access Services management team
  • Supervision of 4.25 librarians, 7.5 technicians, and student assistants
  • Responsibility for overall planning and budgeting of Library’s collections
  • Coordination of physical access policies and procedures for the Library
  • Responsibility for overall planning and coordination of access to electronic resources on- and off-site
  • Promotion of strategies to simplify access to and increase use of electronic resources
  • Assessment of collection in terms of usage and costs and alignment with user needs
  • Responsibility for overall planning and implementation of library systems for resource management, access, and document delivery
  • Coordination of library systems with Library’s web and social media presence
  • Tracking and promotion of scholarly communication issues to inform library practice and educate faculty
  • Planning for and oversight of physical facilities
  • Service on appropriate Library, School and University Committees
  • Preparation of grant proposals to expand Library services and resources
  • Oversight of documentation of all departmental activities and systems
  • Participation in planning and management of the Library as a whole
  • Participation  in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences Problem-Oriented, Case-based Learning (PCL) program as a librarian tutor
  • Participation in the departmental Library Liaison program providing instruction and informational services to various departments (both academic and clinical) in conjunction with reference department.

 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited school
  • At least 5 years of increasing responsibility in a health sciences or academic library, including 3 or more years of supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated strong working knowledge of library technical services operations, integrated library systems, and electronic resource management
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of budgets  in a health sciences or academic library
